Everything you need to know about BB Cream

BB Cream has been around for years, but it’s still one of those products that are a little mysterious to some of us. What is BB Cream? How is it different than a foundation? Do I need to use it? Those are questions we often get asked by our friends, so we decided to pose the same questions to Jane Iredale Global Educators: Edgar Dominguez, Hannah Hatcher, and Shawn Towne.

Without any more delay, because we know you want to get the scoop, here’s your guide to all things BB Cream.

What is BB Cream?

Shawn: BB Creams are essentially high coverage tinted moisturizers with added skincare benefits. Originally created in Germany, they gained popularity in the Far East before making their way west. The letters BB originally stood for Blemish Balm but, since the word Blemish is commonly associated with acne in the US, the term Beauty Balm was adapted.

Hannah: They have a velvety finish and an elevated SPF.  They’re ideal for someone who is craving that full coverage, perfect finish, in addition to anyone experiencing hyper- or hypo-pigmentation.

What makes Glow Time BB Cream different and why should we use it?

Hannah: BB Creams have sort of become diluted over the years as the trend gained popularity all over the world.  So many BB Creams are almost like a tinted moisturizer.  Glow Time BB Cream is true to the original concept, of being full coverage with skin protection and skin soothers built in.

Shawn: Coconut Alkanes also allow our formula to give great non-comedogenic hydration while our coverage is exquisite.

Edgar: The Glow Time BB Cream formula is truly “flawless coverage in a tube.” It proves impeccable complexion is possible, no filter needed!

Which skin types do you normally recommend using Glow Time BB Cream?

Hannah: Everyone, except for true oily skins.  I find that the Glow Time is almost too rich for someone who has very oily skin. When your skin starts to overproduce oil and it mixes with the Glow Time it almost looks like it’s going to slide off the skin.

Edgar: I recommend it to people with all types of skin. Many people believe that due to its high coverage it can be heavy or thick, but not with Glow Time BB Cream. It’s the total opposite; it feels weightless. Even if a person has smooth clear skin, with Glow Time they will achieve a very sophisticated polished effect.  People with blemished skin will be able to disguise any imperfections and achieve the illusion of flawless complexion.

How do you make sure Glow Time BB Cream lasts all day?

Hannah: Primer always!  I also like to set it with powder, just to add a hint more coverage and keep it in place.  You can also use Pure Matte or Amazing Matte to set it if you want to tone down the velvety finish.

Want to Learn How to Apply BB Cream?

  • Start by priming and moisturizing your skin using BeautyPrep Face Moisturizer.
  • Squeeze a pea size amount of Glow Time BB Cream onto the tip of your pointer finger.
  • Using your three middle fingers from each hand, gently rub your fingertips together so that the BB Cream is spread evenly on all six fingers.
  • Now, begin gently tapping your fingertips all over your face.

Finish: Dewy
Coverage: Sheer to full
Use it if… You have normal to dry skin and are looking for a loose mineral foundation that gives a sheer to medium coverage. Amazing Base can be applied using a Chisel Powder Brush for sheer to medium coverage or a Flocked Sponge for full coverage.
Pro Tip: Bring this foundation with you when you travel by putting it in the Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush, a mess-free way to apply loose powder on-the-go.

Finish: Semi-matte
Coverage: Sheer to full
Use it if… You have normal to oily skin and are looking for a simple, everyday foundation. Our PurePressed Base comes in 24 shades for women of all skin tones, is made from micronised minerals and is free of synthetic chemicals. Need more of a reason to love this powder? It is oil-free, weightless and can be used as a foundation, finishing powder and concealer. Apply it with the Handi Brush for sheer to medium coverage or the Flocked Sponge for full coverage.
Pro Tip: PurePressed Base can also be used for highlighting and contouring. Choose colours that are a shade or two darker than your skin tone as a contour powder and a shade or two lighter as a highlighter.

Finish: Velvety
Coverage: Full
Use it if… You have normal to dry skin and are looking for a full coverage foundation to disguise blemishes or dark spots. With Glow Time BB Cream, a little goes a long way. Four small dots of this product will easily cover the entire face and brighten your skin. This nourishing full coverage formula packed with pigment will give your skin a flawless, even finish. Glow Time BB1, BB3, BB5, BB6, BB7 & BB8 offer an SPF 25 while Glow Time BB9, BB11 & BB12 have an SPF rating of 17. The lower rating ensures no ashy finish, which is a common issue when applying SPF on darker skin tones.
Pro Tip: Mix Glow Time BB Cream with a little bit of Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener to help it glide on your skin without diluting the foundation colour.

Jane Iredale Foundation LIQUID MINERALS

Finish: Dewy
Coverage: Sheer to medium
Use it if… You want an anti-ageing foundation that doubles as a powerful skin treatment. Ideally suited to mature skins, but anyone with a normal to dry skin searching for a dewy finish should try this formula, it’s like none other. Liquid Minerals is a hydrating treatment serum with pigment that helps to soothe the skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores and evens out skin tone. The state-of-the-art technology prevents active ingredients Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 from degrading, allowing them to time release into the skin. Not only does this foundation look attractive, it does wonders for the health of the skin.
Pro Tip: If you have extra dry skin during winter, add Liquid Minerals to your makeup routine because it contains Hyaluronic Acid, which attracts moisture and holds up 1,000 times its weight in water. This is our only foundation that doesn’t contain a broad spectrum SPF so be sure to dust a little Amazing Base or PurePressed Base on top for SPF protection.

Finish: Light
Coverage: Sheer to medium
Use it if… You want the no-makeup- makeup look that offers lightweight coverage and a smooth finish to the skin. Dream Tint can be applied with your fingers, just like any other moisturiser. While the coverage is sheer, the results are impactful. Dream Tint gives a soft-focus effect that helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores while protecting the skin with SPF 15. Great for teenagers and men that react to normal sunscreen and women searching for an effective, good-for-you tinted moisturiser.
Pro Tip: Dream Tint is oil-free, so it is a great base for oily skin. It can be used to extend the wear of our mineral powders when used as a primer.

We’ve all heard that most women are wearing the wrong foundation shade, but that doesn’t have to be true for you. When testing foundation shades on yourself, follow these three steps:

  1. Apply a stripe of foundation on your jawline (we usually do this with two or three shades for comparison).
  2. Spray it with one of our Hydration Sprays to set the minerals.
  3. If it looks like it’s disappeared on your skin, that’s your shade.

If you want a personalised foundation prescription now, refer to our Foundation Colour Match Charts to see which of our mineral foundations is right for you and which shades best match your skin tone.

Beat the winter blues with these hot health tips and recipes

Hello Tea Lovers!

As the days get shorter, the nights get longer and a chilly winter sets in, we need to adjust our lifestyles to match the natural rhythm of a different season. Winter is the season for “storage” in Chinese Medicine.  It is the storage of winter that allows for the aliveness of Spring. It is the storage of Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang that is important and this is done by using an appropriate diet for the cooler seasons, as well as modifying our lifestyle in other ways.

In winter, the water element predominates which corresponds to our kidneys and bladder. To strengthen the water energy and keep the body in balance it`s important to keep warm.

So it probably comes as no surprise to see “Drinking Herbal teas” as one of my top tips to stay healthy in winter. Check out my other tips below.

1. DRINK HERBAL TEAS. Warm water and herbal teas are the best support for the kidneys (avoid cold water).

2. KEEP WARM. Wear scarves and extra layers or scarves around your mid-section to keep the abdomen and kidneys warm.

3. WARMING COOKING METHODS- Get the slow cooker out! Warming methods of cooking such as baking and stewing or anything that is cooked over a long period and at a low heat is a warming method of cooking from a TCM perspective and will help to nourish the kidneys.

4. SPICE IT UP! Use aromatic herbs and spices in cooking such as ginger, cardamon, cinnamon, oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary to warm up foods and help assist with digestion. Or, start the day with BBTC’s chai tea!

5. ROOT VEGETABLES- Carrots, beetroots and parsnips are vegetables that grow in winter and help with the drawing down of energy to warm internally, to tonify and build kidney chi.

6. SALTY FOODS– miso, seaweed, sea salt, millet, barley plus any food made salty by the addition of salt- but don’t overdo it! These foods have a drawing down and centering action that heightens the capacity for storage and warmth.

7. BITTER FOODS– lettuce, watercress, endive, turnip, celery, asparagus, alfalfa, carrot, rye, oats, quinoa and amaranth. Like salty foods, these will have a drawing down and centering action that heightens the capacity for storage and warmth.

8. MISO SOUP is a kidney favourite: add sliced mushrooms, wakame (a sea vegetable), grated ginger and carrots and miso. Before adding the miso, make it into a paste with warm water and then add to the soup.

9. HERBS– Nettles (in BBTC’s Skin & Detox tea) and Dandelion root (in BBTC’s Detox tea) are particularly great kidney tonic herbs.

10. MICRO-ALGAE- chlorella and spirulina have a wide cross section of nutrients to help build the blood and tonify the kidneys.

So, to celebrate winter and help you to stay healthy and warm, we are offering my large tin favourites (in both loose and teabags) at 25% off the normal price until the end of June. Loose leaf tins make approximately 110 cups, pyramid teabag tins contain 60 teabags.
