Excessive Transepidermal Water Loss – 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼!
If you’re suffering from excessive transepidermal water loss, you will begin to notice some or all of the key indicators of dehydrated and dry skin, including flaking, roughness, and increased visibility of fine lines. You may also feel oily later in the day.
Feelings of tightness and discomfort are also signs of excessive trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) which is the result of the rate of water loss in the skin out pacing its ability to replace it. A lack of water within the skin is the result of an impaired skin barrier that is not able to retain water. Water passes from inside the skin to the surrounding atmosphere. Damage to the skin will impair the functioning of the epidermis and its ability to retain a good water balance.
Causes of an impaired skin barrier can be as a result of genetics, age or lifestyle 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁, the leading cause is incorrect choice of harsh ‘skincare’ products or treatments which disturb the skin’s acid mantle or even injure the skin.
Avoid products that ‘strip’ the skins acid mantle. If you feel tight or dehydrated after cleansing or applying any of your skin care products our advice is to stop using them.
Avoid treatments that ‘strip’ the skins acid mantle or remove skin from your barrier, like harsh exfoliation treatments. There is no such thing as ‘dead skin cells’ on our skin. Once they naturally desquamate and leave our body thats when they are no longer of use. Removing these prematurely doesn’t repair how our skin cells reproduce. Over exfoliating removes our much needed barrier leaving your skins 1st line of defence unprotected from the elements, pollutants etc.
Healthy OR unhealthy skin is accumulative! Treat your skin well and it will continue to improve over the years. Treat your skin poorly, harshly or with quick fixes and the signs will show up later!
